Table radio belonging to first group of devices produced in the inaugural year of Braun Design, following the company's appointment of the HfG Ulm. The SK 2 was notable as being the only product within the initial group designed by Braun staff without assistance from the HfG. It is indicative of the ad hoc conditions of Braun Design's earliest years that neither of the SK 2's authors, Artur Braun (company director and engineer) and Dr Fritz Eichler (creative director), were formally trained industrial designers.
Dr Fritz Eichler's background was in theatre set design, with a focus in puppetry. During the 1960s development of the Braun Programme Eicher would become a significant shaping influence both as the overall head of the Design Department and, more personally, as mentor to Dieter Rams.
